Romantic Evening In

3 years ago in Seattle, John came to visit for a long weekend. While I was at work on Friday, John went to Pike Place Market and picked up some fresh ingredients, knowing I would enjoy opening the bags to find out what was inside and cook up a feast for us. That evening, I opened up one bag to find 2 lbs of mussels, lemon, fresh cut dill, onion and homemade sausage. Grabbing a bottle of dry white wine from the fridge, I sautéed the onion, some garlic and the sausage in a stock pot and poured the wine over them. I added chicken broth, brought to a boil, and dropped the mussels in for a minute to steam them open. We filled large soup bowls with the garlicky broth and mussels, as eager to spoon the onion and sausage into our mouths as the mussels! Fresh dill and lemon squeezed over the top completed the meal.

3 years later, it’s still our favorite romantic evening in meal. Last night, in honor of the Seattle-like weather and finally having a weekend to ourselves, we brought out the mussels again. This time, spicy calabrese sausage complemented the sauvignon blanc and garlic broth. We topped it off with a baguette and Block 8 San Lorenzo Zinfandel from Seghesio. Yum!
